Patterns of major photosynthetic pigments in freshwater algae. 1. Cyanoprokaryota, Rhodophyta and Cryptophyta

چکیده
Besides ultrastructural and biochemical characteristics, thallus color, which is due to antenna pigments of the photosynthetic apparatus, is one of the major distinguishing criteria in the classification of algae, finding its reflection in the likes of cyanoprocaryota, rhodophyta, chlorophyta, xanthophyceae, chrysophyceae, or phaeophyceae. The majority of past studies on algal pigments, however, have dealt almost exclusively with abundant marine taxa of the coccolithophorids (prymnesiophyceae haptophyta), bacillariophyceae (heterokontophyta), dinophyta or benthic macroalgae (eg. Gieskes & Kraay 1983, Mantoura & Llewellyn 1983, Wright & Shearer 1984, Gieskes & Kraay 1986a, b, Klein & Sournia 1987, Roy 1989, Veldhuis & Kraay 1990, Kohata & Watanabe 1991, Wright et al 1991, Tester et al. 1995, Jeffrey et al. 1997, Hiraoka et al. 1998, Meyer-Harms & Pollehne 1998, Schofield et al. 1998). As a consequence, detailed information about typical limnic taxa is still scarce, to date (e.g. Millie et al. 1990, Senge & Senger 1991, Wilhelm et al. 1991, Woitke et al. 1996, Nicklisch & Woitke 1999).

Origin and evolution of organisms as deduced from 5S ribosomal RNA sequences.
A phylogenetic tree of most of the major groups of organisms has been constructed from the 352 5S ribosomal RNA sequences now available. The tree suggests that there are several major groups of eubacteria that diverged during the early stages of their evolution. Metabacteria (= archaebacteria) and eukaryotes separated after the emergence of eubacteria. Among eukaryotes, red algae emerged first;...
متن کاملPhotosynthetic Pigments: Perplexing Persistent Prevalence of ‘Superfluous’ Pigment Production
Phycobilins function as light-harvesting pigments in most cyanobacteria and red algae. Although green cyanobacteria of the genus Prochlorococcus express genes encoding enzymes that direct the synthesis of phycobilins, these pigments do not appear to play a role in light harvesting in Prochlorococcus. Now, it is shown that cyanophages infecting Prochlorococcus also contain genes for phycobilin-s...

The updated version of PLMItRNA reports information and multialignments on 609 genes and 34 tRNA molecules active in the mitochondria of Viridiplantae (27 Embryophyta and 10 Chlorophyta), and photosynthetic algae (one Cryptophyta, four Rhodophyta and two Stramenopiles). Colour-code based tables reporting the different genetic origin of identified genes allow hyper-textual link to single entries...
متن کاملEffects of Cadmium on Growth, Photosynthetic Pigments, Photosynthetic Performance, Biochemical Parameters and Structure of Chloroplasts in the Agarophyte Gracilaria domingensis (Rhodophyta, Gracilariales)
This paper aimed to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of cadmium on growth rates, photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetic performance, biochemical parameters and structure of chloroplasts in G. domingensis. To accomplish this, apical segments of G. domingensis were cultivated with different concentrations of cadmium, ranging from 100 to 300 μM, over a period of 16 days, and were ...
متن کاملUltrastructure of blue-green algae.
Two freshwater blue-green algae, Tolypothrix tenuis and Fremyella diplosiphon, and an oscillatorialike marine alga, were found to possess structures on the photosynthetic lamellae which appear to correspond to the phycobilisomes of red algae. These homologous structures are important because they contain the phycobilins which are accessory pigments involved in photosynthesis. As in the red alga...
